Choice and you
Let us begin by talking about life. Anything which does not have life is called inanimate object. And it is considered to be of no value. It does not have rights. It does not have moral codes. It does not fight back if it is not treated well. It does not matter whether it exists or not. And hence the reason, why the concept of life gives rise to the concept of “value” . What you don’t value, you don’t care about. And here comes the best part. What has no value, has no choice. A thing of no value does not have a choice. And now that we are in agreement with the fact that anything with life has a value, by default, anything with life has a choice. Always.
Man is usually depicted to be the only thing with life that matters and everything below it is assumed to be there to be used by man. You kill a tree, it doesn’t cry. It doesn’t have other trees to cry for it. It doesn’t have the power or authority to fight for itself. And animals, well, they can fight back, but cannot defend itself beyond a point. Finally, we are left with man. You kill a man, it is considered evil. It is considered immoral. You will be punished for it. And herein comes the moral code of human beings. Made by humans for humans. Man has two primary choices….and unlike other organisms, only he has that choice. To live or not to live. If he chooses not to live, he loses value. He becomes an inanimate object with no value. And if he chooses to live, he chooses so because he wants value.
So what is this value we speak of? On a global basis, if you look at one human being, his value is determined by other human beings around him. Man has been called a rational being, but rationality is a matter of choice—and the alternative his nature offers him is: rational being or suicidal animal. Man has to be man—by choice; he has to hold his life as a value—by choice: he has to learn to sustain it—by choice; he has to discover the values it requires and practice his virtues—by choice.
That said and done….think about this. A plant struggles to force its roots into the ground, just so that it can survive. A bird breaks its wings to fly, for that is its basic means of survival. A tiger learns to kill, to survive. Man is just like all these other organisms. Man has to do what has to be done to survive…to fulfill his purpose of existence. But man has always been forced to live his life for others. That is the only way he gains value. A boy who listens to his parents is a good boy. A man who earns for himself and keeps himself happy is called a loser. A man who earns for his family is called a good father and husband and son and so on. Now you might interrupt me saying that “man is a social animal”. Think about it. What society are you talking about? The one which comprises only of you and the people who you care about? Or the entire human population? And if you are going to choose the latter option, I have a question for you. When was the last time you cared for someone who is a total stranger? You gave alms to a beggar. Well that is not what you would do for your brother if he needed money. So now there arises a double standard system – your society is split now – one which matters and one which does not matter- the latter being something which u will help only when u can afford it.
So forget arguing about living life as a social animal. And think about the individual’s purpose. Now tell me what is your purpose in life. There are people who would say that living life for others gives them happiness. But if that is happiness, its shallow. People can never have the people whose happiness they do things for with them always. People cannot be attached to anything or anyone forever. So that would mean your happiness is just a place holder. Which brings us back to purpose. So what is your purpose in life, if it is not to keep yourself happy? Man exists, with emotions. You and me both do things primarily for our own happiness. But what gives us happiness?
That is a question intended for future posts. Stop reading this now. Close your browser. Shut down your system. Close your eyes and think. It might be scary. You may not come up with any answer. Think about it. When was the last time you woke up thinking today I will do whatever it takes to keep myself happy, when all your life is about that one sole purpose?
What is this blog all about?
Does it have any purpose ? No
Do you have to spend your time reading it? No
Will I have missed something if I dont read it? Yes
What is the selling point of this blog? If you keep reading this, you will feel that you have found something which you had been missing in your life. But when you find what that is, you will begin to think that it would have been better if you had not found it in the first place.
Cant wait for it? Sorry you got no choice.
